DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: Patient Care Support department in Madras includes multidisciplinary support for the Madras campus that includes House Supervisors and Case Manager. 

POSITION OVERVIEW: The House Supervisor provides clinical leadership , coordination and supervision while ensuring quality patient and family centered care as a member of the health care team in accordance with St. Charles Health System mission, philosophy, policies, and procedures.  Functioning as the point person for bed control and for receiving requests for direct admissions and transfers, and over-seeing house-wide clinical staffing functions.  This position also serves as the on-site administrative agent in off-hours and in the absence of administrative personnel.  The House Supervisor is a role model and mentor for staff.  The Supervisor applies standards for professional nursing practice and focuses clinical care to enhance the experience for patients, families, and all others while functioning in alignment with the Leadership approach of St. Charles Health System.   This position will directly supervise other caregivers, such as Charge RNs, RNs, CNAs and other caregivers as assigned.


Supervises daily patient assignments and assures patients are assigned to appropriate caregiver based on acuity and skills of caregiver. Coordinates and integrates resources throughout the institution.   Problem solves on a daily basis utilizing appropriate resources and communicates concerns to the Department Managers, Chief Nursing Officer, Duty Administrator, and Medical Staff as appropriate.

Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments. Fosters team work with all shifts and other units/departments.

Maintains and demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards, and techniques and applies this knowledge in accordance with St. Charles Health System policies and procedures and within laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon. Maintains / builds clinical skills and expertise for service by staying current in developments and knowledge of practice area.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients, medical staff and guests by identifying patient, guest and caregivers risk management issues and address as appropriate.

Promotes a patient-centered environment by clarifying, integrating, and coordinating the roles of the interdisciplinary team and conducting leadership rounds with patients and families performing service recovery in response to patient or medical staff concerns or complaints in order to provide a world-class patient experience.

Performs various supervisory duties surrounding caregiver performance evaluation and management, including coaching, mentoring, , scheduling, overall time management and collaborating with the Manager and Human Resources in the Corrective Action process as appropriate.

Assists with implementation of and supports all organizational initiatives and goals (including but not limited to patient satisfaction, safety, quality, and financial). Participates in continuous quality improvement and departmental activities. Actively supports quality improvement through leading improvement projects, monitoring quality metrics, and completion of audits.  

Supervises quality, customer service and regulatory compliance as well as collaborates with other Clinical Supervisors and Managers when investigating events in the Event Management System (EMS). Follows up on incidents in EMS and other risk management issues as identified in the department.

Supports facility / system budgetary responsibilities by managing staffing, productivity, patient flow, bed placement and triage.

Participates in interviewing and hiring. 

Collaborates with house wide Nursing Leadership to identify education needs and shares expertise with caregivers.  Partners with department leadership and Clinical Education to ensure staff trainings are provided and meet required education needs.  May develop and deliver staff training and education as decided by leadership.

Demonstrates, mentors, supervises and supports integration of patient, guest, medical staff and staff safety initiatives and changes in evidence based practice as developed with or directed by Leadership.

Coordinates inter-facility patient transfers with Transfer Center staff.  Monitors transfer request calls for EMTALA compliance.

Collaborates with system Pharmacist during off hours to ensure patient parmecuetuical needs are met. 


Calculates dosages and administers medications accurately in accordance with St. Charles Health System policies and procedures for medication administration.


Participates in creating a healing environment that supports all aspects of the care environment and the wholeness of each individual, patient and caregiver.

Participates in creating intentional relationships and demonstrates focus attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience.

Provides a therapeutic presence in service to others by purposefully responding to the needs of patients in a caring way, including introducing oneself and explaining role in patient’s care, asking the patient his or her preferred name, sitting with the patient to determine his or her care goals, active listening, and communicating effectively and appropriately through touch, eye contact, etc.

Documents all patient care with proficiency in compliance with hospital policies, procedures and regulatory agencies.

Required:  As required by licensure.

Preferred:  BSN and/or additional management training.


Required:   Current Oregon RN license

AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification

ACLS within 60 days of hire. 

TNCC, PALS or ENPC, Moderate Sedation, NRP and AVADE training within 3 months of hire.

Preferred: N/A 


Required: Three years clinical nursing experience.

Additional management classes may be required prior to or after hire.

Preferred:  Management experience.


Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.


Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.

Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills. 

Strong team working and collaborative skills.

Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. 

Basic to intermediate ability and experience with computer applications, specifically electronic medical records system and MS Office.
