Position Summary

Teacher Residency Programs build on the medical residency model: residents gradually build their knowledge and skills in a classroom with students, working alongside an experienced mentor teacher, while simultaneously learning about the core of teaching in their university courses. Because residents' learning is directly connected to what is actually happening in the classroom, every program aspect relates to developing a well-informed and well-prepared teacher through a practice-based approach with a focus on understanding the context and culture of the schools where teachers will serve. With this, residents can more effectively serve and respond to diverse student populations in urban and high needs classrooms.

Since 2018, CPS and National Louis University have partnered to offer MAT Teacher Residency Programs in the following areas of district-indicated high needs:

  • Elementary Education Bilingual (Grade 1-6)
  • Early Childhood Education Bilingual (PK-2)
  • Early Childhood Education Special Education (PK-2)

Residents in the above programs are current CPS paraprofessionals or career changers, new to the field of teaching.

The Residency Field Coach ( RFC ) role is crucial to the success of this program. The RFC will provide direct coaching and guidance to both resident teacher candidates and their CPS Mentor Teacher for one full academic school year (Fall through Spring terms). Different from NCE's traditional Supervision model, the RFC will have this stronger focus on coaching the Mentor Teacher on how to use assessment and performance to coach their resident teacher as many Mentors need additional support in giving effective feedback. Together, CPS , NLU , and the RFC will agree on key strategies and components of instruction, forms of assessment, and a framework for evaluation of performance. The common language will help codify expectations across the program for coaching and assessing. The RFC and Mentor Teachers should regularly norm and discuss expectations for coaching and resident performance so they align with the common language of the program.

The Residency Field Coach's primary responsibilities include:
- Serving as liaison between residency faculty lead, the resident teacher, Mentor Teacher.
- Developing a relationship with Mentor Teacher(s) that supports and enhances NLU's mission and goals.
- Developing a strategy with the Mentor Teacher and resident teacher to meet all program requirements, including course assignments and licensure expectations.
- Directly observing NLU resident teacher at their assigned school, providing on-going feedback to NLU resident teacher on lesson plans and observations.
- Providing feedback to Mentor Teacher on coaching techniques.
- Arranging and conducting appraisal and assessment meetings with all parties to encourage and facilitate the professional growth of the candidate.
-Providing feedback to NLU residency team on roles and practices for coaching resident teachers and Mentor Teachers.
- Attending required professional development opportunities offered by the National College of Education and Chicago Public Schools.

Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in an education or education-related field preferred,
  • Has a State of Illinois licensure (preferred),
  • Has a minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching experience and/or equivalent related experience in the field,
  • Has current professional field experience preferred (Special Education in PK-2 classrooms; Bilingual in Spanish in PK-2 classrooms; and/or Bilingual in Spanish in Grades 1-6), and
  • Can commit a minimum of 12 hours on average each month to the duties of this role.
