Rural Dynamics Summer Assoc. - IFHC COVID Community Outreach

The overall goal of the proposed project is focused upon providing patient and community education utilizing various vehicles and tools related to topics and information for COVID-19, COVID-19 Testing, and COVID-19 vaccinations. Founded October 1, 1999, Indian Family Health Clinic of Great Falls, Inc. (IFHC), a nonprofit and established Urban Indian facility located and headquartered in Great Falls, Montana. IFHC has provided comprehensive and culturally sensitive patient-centered health services for the Urban Indian population. The primary service area is composed of approximately over 9,000 Urban Indians with an additional 5,400 Tribal Members representing the Little Shell Tribe. American Indian or Alaska Native individuals are the second largest population identified in Cascade County, with 15,000 individuals identified as AI/AN alone and an estimated 5,444 individuals identified as AI/AN alone or in combination with one or more races. The percent of AI/ANs aged 16+ who were unemployed was 3.3 times higher than NHW. Urban Indians within the IFHC service area face several challenges when trying to access quality and culturally appropriate health care. The Great Falls Urban Indian population have high mortality rates that provide a strong indicator of current health, socioeconomic, and disparities confronting the Urban Indian population in the Great Falls community. The all-cause mortality rate was significantly higher for the AI/AN population than the Non- Hispanic White (NHW) population. The AI/ANs experience a mortality rate that is 2.6 times higher than NHWs. The statistics are reflective of pre-COVID-19 conditions. IFHC has observed a significant increase in health care needs, health care literacy related to COVID-19, and overall understanding of access to services. Member Duties : The program will focus upon the following three priorities: connecting with the community, sincere follow-up practices, and patient safety outreach. The member will identify, develop, and create relevant messaging, vehicles, and tools to support program goal related to COVID-19, COVID-19 testing, and COVID-19 vaccinations. The member will work cooperatively with Health Clinic and Departmental staff, to plan and conduct outreach efforts directly with patients to ensure materials have been received and to provide additional information, as needed. The Summer Associate will develop / identify sources of patient appreciation materials, including marketing content related to COVID-19. The member will assist the program staff with keeping website content and listing information updated and accessible to all. The member will use a tracking system for overall outreach success, appreciation efforts, and sustainability by recording outputs and conducting outreach debriefs.
