Rural Dynamics - Red Lodge Area Community Foundation
We at Red Lodge Area Community Foundation invite you to join our
Workforce Housing team as an AmeriCorps Vista member. Located in
central Montana, Red Lodge is the basecamp to the Beartooth
Mountains, 10 minutes from Red Lodge Mountain ski resort and 1 hour
from Yellowstone National Park. As a resort community in a
beautiful area, affordable housing for the workforce is very
difficult to find. One in four homes in the City of Red Lodge are
owned by second home-owners; most second homes are used for
short-term rentals such as Airbnb and VRBO. According to Headwaters
Economics, Carbon County has the lowest housing affordability of
all resort communities in Montana, and businesses are having
trouble expanding due to housing issues. The intended results of
this project is to increase the quantity and quality of housing
choices in Carbon County, provide the community with awareness of
housing issues, and expand housing opportunities through training
and education. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Trust
Montana, and local stakeholders, we hope to increase the
affordability of homeownership and rentals for all in Carbon
County. The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation is committed to
supporting the VISTA member throughout their service with
assistance finding housing, accessing local food programs, and
offering flexible professional development opportunities tailored
to the members' goals and skills. We cannot wait to show you all
that living and serving in Big Sky country has to offer! Further
help on this page can be found by clicking here.
Member Duties : The VISTA member will build capacity for
volunteers at the Owner-Built Housing build site, update the 2016
Housing Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan, and research solutions
for the lack of affordable long-term rentals the Carbon County
workforce is experiencing. The member will recruit and manage
volunteers throughout their service year with support from Helena
Area Habitat for Humanity. The member will work closely with the
Workforce Housing Coordinator and Steering Committee to conduct the
2021 Housing Needs Assessment and develop our Strategic Plan.
Depending on the member's skills and professional interests, they
may also support increased access to financial education workshops,
tiny home communities, ADU development, reduced impact fees for
affordable housing construction, a local clearinghouse for
long-term rentals, and developing relationships between
stakeholders to create capacity for long-term rentals.
