Job Description:

The Clinical Informaticist, working with the CMIO, clinical leadership, and the CIO, supports the integration of information technology and clinical practice across the continuum of care. The Clinical Informaticist helps ensure technologies are in place to support and measure clinical quality and to document clinical processes. The Informaticist provides guidance and advice in designing clinical workflow and technology use to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, evidenced based medicine, and best practices. The Informaticist serves as a bridge between end users, subject matter experts, application analysts and other implementation and support staff. The Informaticist maintains a close working relationship with installation teams, reviewing software, providing analysis of business operations, and working with clinical leadership and Subject Matter Experts to tailor applications to meet needs, and to define appropriate workflow to leverage system capabilities. The Informaticist maintains awareness of latest trends and findings in technology support of clinical practice, including meaningful use and other regulatory issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for promoting the understanding, application, and adoption of information technologies in support of the advancement of clinical practice, patient care and clinical functions aligned with Benefis mission and values.

Works in conjunction with the Chief Medical Information Officer, clinical leadership, and the System Chief Information officer to engage providers and clinicians in decision making, design, and use of information technologies, helping ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and clinical best practice.

Coordinates work of Subject Matter Experts in support of clinical decision making for IT projects.

Provides leadership in ensuring evidence based workflow and system design are used in the evolution of the electronic medical record.

Maintains thorough understanding of existing applications capabilities and supports and encourages use of clinical decision support, appropriate automated clinical reminders and rules, and advanced use of technology to support Benefis mission for population care and wellness.

The Informaticist may direct and coordinate the work of the IT analysts on projects and serve as an expert on the assigned applications and projects. The Informaticist also ensures internal procedures are effectively developed and documented supporting effective, quality care in conjunction with use of information technologies.

Recommends training and education initiatives and techniques to ensure a high degree of awareness and knowledge of available information technologies to support patient care, as well as participates in and leading in training users.

The Informaticist may help analysts in performing in-depth analyses of workflows, completing data collection, defining report details, and assist analysts with other technical issues associated with the use of information technologies.

Coordinates with IT clinical governance, task force groups, and project steering committees to provide advice and direction regarding effective deployment of technology and application systems.

Leads multi-disciplinary teams to plan for use of technology and applications, and to resolve issues and problems effectively.

Provides recommendations to clinical and IT leadership regarding plans and budgets to expand and enhance technology support for clinical practice.

Takes a lead role, working with users, analysts, and management in investigating possible improper or inaccurate applications performance or use, including any possible IT related patient safety issues.

Demonstrates knowledge of current software systems, operation procedures and technological developments.

When necessary may performs dictionary or table maintenance to ensure proper system performance or enhance system functionality.

Works with analysts to ensure effective user documentation consistent with patient care requirements and related procedures.

Maintains awareness of and familiarity with various aspects of user access and input techniques, as well as IT terminology, information system processing, and clinical devices.

Assists departmental application team members in accomplishing all activities necessary to support patient care information system application(s).

Identifies documents and assists in the resolution of issues relating to clinical systems.

Attends clinical systems meetings to update members on project(s) status, as well as to address other relevant issues.

Identifies problems and develops solutions through coordination and collaboration among clinical areas, Information Systems, ancillary departments, and across the continuum of care.

Performs feasibility studies and cost analysis of system changes; evaluates software.

Uses project management and process improvement techniques to guide effective clinical process and systems design, integrating technology use and adoption.

Maintains a good working relationship with outside consultants and vendors.

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

Consistently demonstrates a professional, self-directed approach to department responsibilities.

Accepts additional responsibilities as assigned.

Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.

Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.

Current MT state nursing licensure preferred.

Four year degree or equivalent experience and training is required. Masters degree preferred.

Certification of formal training in clinical informatics is highly preferred.

Five years' full time, current clinical experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge required.

Previous experience in a senior or lead role implementing clinical systems applications primarily used by Benefis is highly preferred.

Previous experience in staff development is preferred.
