Summary The ICU Nurse Manager is responsible for managing and
supervising nursing operations within a clinical department. This
role collaborates with nursing leadership and other departments to
ensure high-quality patient care, operational efficiency, and staff
development. The position supports organizational goals by
maintaining effective departmental structures, processes, and
standards of care. Responsibilities are typically distributed as: -
50% Tactical: Day-to-day activities such as staffing coordination
and equipment availability - 40% Operational: Budget management,
supply acquisition, and employee performance evaluations - 10%
Strategic: Developing and implementing departmental goals aligned
with the organization’s strategic plan ScopeLevel 1 Nurse Manager -
Manages fewer than 50 staff members or a department operating
Monday through Friday. Level 2 Nurse Manager – Complex - Manages
more than 50 staff members or multiple departments operating 24/7.
Key Responsibilities - Oversee the clinical nursing environment and
ensure high standards of patient care. - Support strategic planning
and operational initiatives within the department. - Facilitate
collaborative problem-solving and promote shared decision-making
among staff. - Manage departmental budgets including operating,
capital, and personnel budgets. - Monitor expenses and ensure
effective use of available resources. - Foster a professional work
environment that promotes employee engagement and accountability. -
Ensure adequate staffing levels through recruitment, onboarding,
retention, and staff development. - Support ongoing competency
verification, training, and mentorship programs. - Conduct staff
performance reviews and peer evaluations. - Ensure compliance with
patient safety initiatives and regulatory requirements. -
Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to achieve
clinical and operational goals. - Monitor patient satisfaction
metrics and implement improvement initiatives. - Support student
nurse programs and professional development opportunities. -
Encourage participation in community health and outreach programs.
Required Skills & Experience - Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing
experience - Leadership or supervisory experience - Strong
leadership and communication skills - Problem-solving and critical
thinking ability - Financial and operational management knowledge -
Clinical expertise and patient safety awareness - Resource
management and staff mentorship Preferred Skills & Experience -
Demonstrated experience in departmental oversight or nursing
leadership. Education Required - Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
from an accredited institution. Certifications & Licensure Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers -
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
Preferred - Specialty certification related to nursing leadership
or ICU specialty. Additional Requirements - Completion of required
leadership training within one year of accepting the role. -
Compact nursing licenses must be transferred to the state of
practice within the required timeframe if applicable. Application
